Granite and evergreen Undying earthly themes The stuff of painted scenes Granite and evergreen Granite and evergreen We never spoke in prose Spun phrase on pointed toes The winter that you froze And I taped my windows closed And I taped my windows closed And when I lose control I think of you Retrace the paces that I put you through Loving me was such an awful thing to ask you to do Now I grieve for one I never really knew We never kept it clean Chipped teeth and shredded sheets The year I loved to scream And you were my war machine My gorgeous war machine And when I lose control I think of you Retrace the paces that I put you through Loving me was such an awful thing to ask you to do Now I grieve for one I never really knew Granite and evergreen Perfect, timeless and obscene I prefer to love your memory Granite and evergreen

Stare at blinking screens But the movie’s done now I did not see me They must have cut my part out Scenes like these never make the silver screen Stupid me, stupid me This line wraps the block Bless the patient patrons Who can but refuse to walk Put their faith in waiting In rush we trust, we don’t get in but it feels just Stupid us, stupid us Hope hangs heavy in the air No one said this would be fair I will shout your name from the edge of canyons I will feel the same as time passes Ancient glaciers formed me too I still love you, still I love you Hope hangs heavy in the air No one said this would be fair They won’t know my face When I finally go home Someone will fill my place That’s the curse of the road Freedom’s ring is sounds a like lonely Stupid me, stupid me Hope hangs heavy in the air No one said this would be No one said this would be No one said this would be fair

Sun so bright it blinds the sidewalk Mind the sign and post no signs Who forgot to bolt top lock? Busy minds lead busy lives Rewind, replay, rewind What do you really want? What do you really want? What do you really want? Stickers pock the underpasses Where every question gets a shot Feathers mix with shit and ashes Is this where things come to rot? Forgave but not forgot What do you really want? What do you really want? What do you really want? Cause I want better I want better If I scream will someone hear me, Over all these gorgeous sounds? Shading trees, leaves blowing gently Like nobody is around What’s still underground? What do you really want? What do you really want? What do you really want? Will I learn better? Than to want better

There’s a postcard with a family full of characters Posing with smiles that never break Can you smell the sunscreen and plastic? Does it matter if it's real or fake? Here’s a snapshot of ass masked in fishnets Flashing an apartment in the dark Can you see the beard past the latex? Does it matter if it’s smut or art? Mom threw out your memories. Mom throughout your memories. There’s a license plate of some uncertain vanity That probably looked this old when it was new Characters arranged with intention Is any one interpretation true? There’s a stone fruit at the center of a memory In a kitchen with a man we didn’t like I learn to drive on a midnight highway I learn which stories are impolite Pits thrown out the window Spit pits out the window I am rich in character-building relationships Magnets for the fridge I am rich in souvenir spoons and make up kits Kept to not forget Sell everything you can, Trash everything you can’t. Sell everything you can, Trash everything you can’t.

I will wait for you Till they burn my body I will sing your tune When you stop responding Foolish youth, How I cling to you who loved me too You loved me too
6.
I flew home just a little too soon It was good for me, it was bad for you We played cards all afternoon You were old for me, I was young for you Explain my history to me Explain yourself, take liberties Empty house on a quiet street I was scared of you, were scared of me? You were mostly fantasy When it came to life I wished I was asleep Explain my history to me Explain yourself, take liberties Now I deal in memories They don’t use the door, they come up like weeds Can’t believe the scenes I see So I close my eyes, I pour new concrete Explain my history to me Explain yourself, take liberties Explain yourself, take liberties Explain yourself, take liberties

about

Two years removed from her last EP Sound I Make – L.A. based singer-songwriter Kirsten Opstad has embarked on her newest project - moons, an ambitious, open-ended undertaking to release a new EP with each successive full moon. The first offering in the cycle, strawberry (released on June 17 and named for June’s Strawberry Moon) is a collection of lo-fi redemption songs for the heartbroken and defiant. Armed with little more than an acoustic guitar, Opstad revisits ex-girlfriends and other ghosts to draw conclusions, gain new truths, and find more in less, growth in loss. At turns polished, playful, and profound, her lyrics are a continuation of the emotional understandings and turn-of-phrase mastery displayed on Sound I Make and 2015’s Stay Strangers. Whether interrogating the big questions (“Will I learn better? / Than to want better?”) or celebrating the minor details (“There’s a stone fruit at the center of a memory”), Opstad has once again proven herself to be a top-notch songwriter, a magnetic poet laureate. Intimate in style and substance, strawberry is a perfect summer campfire companion or the soundtrack to a lonely night in a moonlit apartment. Either way, give it a listen, eat it up – until next month, the next moon.
